Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested five suspects for extorting motorists plying LASU – Igando expressway as well as impersonating Local Government Traffic officers.
The suspects, who claimed to be on contract with the Ikotun-Igando Local Council Development Area, were arrested yesterday afternoon after one Professor Abdulrahman Olayiwola reported that they collected the sum N41,000 from him for driving too slow on the expressway.
According to the complainant, “I was heading towards Igando from LASU when the suspects, operating on the road with Keke NAPEP, forced him to park for not speeding and afterwards forced him to drive to their hideout on LASU-Igando Expressway”.
“It was there that my vehicle was impounded and I was forced to pay N41,000 before my vehicle was released to me the following day”, he added.
During the arrest of the suspects Taiwo Falodun (48), Mukaila Atanda (48), Adedire Olaniyi (40), Chibuzor Eze (26) and Akinseye Alex (48), over 15 private vehicles and two commercial buses had been impounded by the miscreants and their tyres deflated.
In his confessional statement, Taiwo Falodun, a dismissed Spy Policeman and the gang leader, said there are three teams operating within the axis for Ikotun-Igando LCDA, adding that they were engaged to work for the Local Government Council on contract and that the team remits N20,000 weekly to the LCDA.
Preliminary investigations revealed that many private car owners had made payments either in cash or through POS machine allegedly owned by one of the suspects, while payment tickets issued to their victims were also recovered from the team.
